Faculty and Staff,

Effective January 1, 2017, state law AB 1887 prohibited using state funds to pay for travel to a state that has passed a law discriminating based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

As of June 23, 2017, the Attorney General added four states to the list of those affected by this law. The new states are Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota, and Texas. State funds may not be used to pay for university travel to these states, unless a statutory exception applies. Travelers and expense approvers must ensure compliance with this new state law and are encouraged to work with their departmental finance staff if an alternative funding source is needed.

More information about the law, including the list of affected states, is available on the Department of Justice website at oag.ca.gov/ab1887. A list of frequently asked questions is available on the travel website. If you have any questions, please contact Accounts Payable at travel@berkeley.edu.

Thank you,
